beloved cat “Keisha” by her side, she died from
complications of heart failure and dementia. She was
born in Roswell, NM, March 16, 1944, to Jesse Howell
and Loraine Reesie Sims Mangum.

Mangun and Loraine Reesie Sims whom she lost one
month shy of her ninth birthday. Preceding her in death
were her sons Gregory and Keneth Gipson, her sister
Barbara, her brother Charles, her foster parents, NL
“Bubba” and Bessie Mangum Locker, and her brother

Elaine resided the last 1.5 years at the Ashford Assisted
Living Facility where she was visited often by friends,
family and her beloved Kesha. She also made many new
friends both residents and care givers.
Elaine went to Del Rio High School and loved swimming
and doting on her little sister and brother. Sadly for them
she met Douglas Gipson whom she fell madly in love

with. They married on February 17, 1962, and had three
sons, Chad Duane, Keneth David and Gregory Scott in
Corsicana, TX. Doug worked for the Shell Exploration
Company and the family relocated 11 times before
arriving in SLC in 1974.
Elaine started her career in 1975 at the Utah Department
of Waterworks and later transferred to the Department of
Transportation where she retired with a full pension.
Elaine had a personality as effervescent as her favorite
drink, Diet Pepsi. She was often found in her living room,
perfectly content while watching TV, her favorite
pastime.
Elaine loved gardening and sharing that knowledge with
fellow gardeners. Most of all she loved her cat Kesha,
another of her favorite local spots was Lava Hot Springs
and the mountains, places she treasured not only for its
serenity but also for the memories she created there.
Elaine had an exceptional talent and eagle eye in finding
rare treasures at yard sales. She could find a treasure in a
bundle of junk. She loved the color purple and loved
turtles which reflected in her attire, her home decor, and
the flora she chose for her garden.
