The death certificate & cremation process in Utah
A few things are specific to Utah that families often ask about:
- The death certificate. In Utah, the funeral provider works with the certifying physician or the medical examiner to complete and file the death certificate with the Utah Office of Vital Records and Statistics. We handle this filing for you. Request several certified copies — you'll typically need them for life insurance, bank and retirement accounts, property, and Social Security.
- Authorization before cremation. Utah requires authorization before a cremation can take place. Your provider obtains the Utah cremation permit and, when required, clearance from the Office of the Medical Examiner. Because cremation is final, this step is never rushed — it's a safeguard, and it's part of why cremated remains are typically returned within 7–10 days.
- Who can authorize. Utah law sets an order of priority for who may authorize the cremation (generally the surviving spouse, then adult children, then parents, and so on). We'll walk you through exactly who needs to sign.
- Notifying Social Security and others. The Social Security Administration should be notified; in many cases the funeral provider can report the death, but the family handles benefit claims. We can point you to the right next steps.
