Nelson Earl Eddy
Nelson Earl Eddy peacefully passed away surrounded by family on April 20, 2026, one month shy of his 92nd birthday. Earl was a gentle giant; the most patient man we have ever met and had an extremely high pain threshold. He had a warm smile and was always friendly. He was loved by everyone and to know Earl was to love Earl. He will be greatly missed!
He was born in East Liverpool, Ohio on May 20, 1934, to John and Inez Eddy. At age 10, he grabbed a live wire while climbing a cherry tree and lost his hearing in his left ear. He moved with his family to Southern California in his early teens. Earl was very athletic and loved playing sports. As a freshman in high school, he was the starting quarterback on the varsity football team. He met the love of his life, Margaret Nona Eckard, while in junior high school. He had a newspaper route at age 15. When he collected his money, he would go to the store and buy a coke, a bag of chips, and pickle for Margie.
Margie and Earl were married on September 13, 1952. They lived in Baldwin Park, California where they welcomed their two children, Earleen and Frank. In 1962, they moved to their new home in San Dimas, California to be close to Margie’s brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Mae Eckard and their children. They lived in that home for 30 years.
Earl was a very hard worker and always provided for his family. He worked for a hot water heater company, a large bakery and was a pump mechanic for the Los Angeles County Sanitation District. He retired at age 55 and moved to Sandy, Utah to be close to his children and grandchildren. He loved running a cleaning business exclusively cleaning the FedEx Express Station in Murray, Utah for many years.
Making breakfast for family and friends was one of his favorite things to do along with fishing, welding, and bowling. Margie and Earl bowled in many leagues for over 30 years. He loved watching and listening to Los Angeles Dodger games. Earl did not like to spend money and would try to fix things himself. He loved to tinker in his garage spending hours making or fixing something to save money. The term “jimmy-rig” should be changed to “Earl-rigged”.
Margie and Earl moved into Crescent Assisted Living in October of 2021. They were immediately loved by the staff, and they loved them right back. They made many dear friends over the past four years. Playing bingo three times a week was a part of their normal routine and just recently Margie and Earl were crowned as the 2026 King and Queen of the Crescent Spring Prom.
Earl loved being a grandpa (Pops), great grandpa (GP) and was nicknamed the “Baby Whisperer”. With his gentle way, he could calm down a screaming baby, cradle and rock a baby to sleep and keep a child content.
Preceded in death by his parents, John Eddy and Inez Mae Farley, sisters Margaret, Dorothy, Kathryn, Thelma and his brother, Charles. Earl is survived by his wife, Margaret, his daughter, Earleen Robinson (Roger) and son, Frank Eddy (Carrie). His four grandchildren include Eric Robinson (Stefanie), Melissa Cook, Renae McCardell (Mike) and Shawn Eddy (Desiree). His seven great grandchildren are Ryley, Annabelle, Coral, Violet, Finn, Lennon and Stevie. He has two sisters-in-law, Della Mae Eckard and Ruth Eddy.
We would like to thank all the staff at Crescent Senior Living and Good Shepherd Home Care and Hospice for their loving service, kindness and excellent care. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 8 at 5:00 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room at Crescent Assisted Living in Sandy, Utah. In lieu of flowers, please do nice things for others.
We love you GP!
