Donald Joseph Schaeffer

Donald Joseph Schaeffer, 86, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2026, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Born on September 18, 1939, in Oceanside, New York, he was the son of Louis Frederick and Frances Anna (Geib) Schaeffer.

Don took great pride in his work, spending much of his career working as a master plumber. He later started an embroidery service business and was much loved by his customers. He was known for his resourcefulness and creative problem-solving.

Don was a man of diverse interests. He loved trains, spending countless hours meticulously working on models and layouts. He explored historic narrow gauge railroad sites throughout New England.

He had a deep appreciation for classical music and sang with both the Oratorio Society of Utah and Salt Lake Pro Musica. He especially loved performing Handel’s Messiah at the Tabernacle on Temple Square.

Don was a naturally talented artist. From the elegance of his cursive and his entertaining doodles, through his amazing line drawings and paintings, he had a knack for setting the picture in his mind’s eye, or even the scene before his actual eye, to paper.

Don was also a passionate, lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers, and always appreciated a good craft beer.

He enjoyed being in the woods, loved fishing and making memories while visiting his brother, Louis “Butchie,” and sister-in-law, Nancy, at Lake Wynooska.

Above all, Don cherished his family and took immense pride in being a “Pop-Pop.” He leaves behind a legacy rooted in tradition and love.

Don is survived by his children: Don (Lisa), Greta (Dave), Stephan (Amie), and Meggin (Cory), as well as nine beloved grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, with whom he is now reunited.

A celebration of Don's life will be held at the LDS meetinghouse on 1617 East 12700 South, Draper, UT, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 23.
