Nathan Laurence Baker
Nathan Laurence Baker passed away on June 17, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in Bryan, Texas, in December 1956 to James and Charmaine Baker, Nathan spent his youth and early adulthood in the Seattle, Washington area (Renton). He loved playing and listening to music, singing and vocal performance, writing poetry and short stories, and exploring the outdoors. In his younger years, he enjoyed scouting, kayaking, skiing, hiking and camping with his family, and traveling across the United States with his parents and brothers, Alan and Glen, to visit relatives and discover new places. One of his greatest adventures took him to South Africa, where he lived for two years while serving a mission and touching the lives of many people he met.
Nathan met his wife, Karen Lovelle Mortenson, in the Sacramento, California area through their shared interests. As university students at BYU in Provo Utah, they looked forward to building a bright future together and married in August 1987.
Nathan (who had a career in insurance) was hardworking and devoted to taking care of his family. He believed love was shown through commitment, sacrifice, and being present when needed. His steady presence and strong work ethic set an example for others.
Nathan treasured making memories with those he loved most. Family vacations brought him great happiness as he shared laughter, adventure, and unforgettable experiences with his loved ones. He and Karen shared a love for the peaceful beauty of the Pacific Ocean, and many of their favorite family memories came from visits to Washington, Oregon, and California, often spent with extended family.
Nathan was a devoted husband and loving father to his sons, Cameron, Kevin, Chad, and Kyle. Kyle, his youngest son, lives with profound disabilities and requires around-the-clock care, a responsibility Nathan embraced with unwavering devotion. He often read picture books to Kyle in an animated, way and created special songs just for him. His familiar rendition of “Happy Birthday” in Afrikaans will always remain in the family’s hearts.
The Baker family was strengthened by the close-knit spirit Nathan helped nurture throughout his life. Together, they faced challenges, supported one another through changing times, and celebrated life’s blessings. Whether watching movies, gathering around backyard campfires filled with family stories, honoring holiday traditions, or planning the next adventure, these shared moments became treasured memories that reflected the love and unity Nathan worked so hard to build.
Nathan leaves a legacy of quiet strength, devotion, and unconditional love. He will be remembered for the life he built for his family, the everyday that brought them together, and the example he set through dedication, kindness, and selflessness. His memory will live on in the traditions he established, the values he instilled, and the family who will forever carry his love with them.
A man of great faith, Nathan is now reunited in joy and glory with loved ones who passed (including his dad) before him. The Baker family will gather in Colorado to celebrate his life.
