How Much Does Cremation Cost in Utah?

An honest breakdown of what cremation actually costs in Utah — from $995 direct cremation to full-service options — and the questions that reveal the true total.

The short answer

In Utah, a direct cremation — the simplest option, with no formal service — can cost as little as $995. Cremation paired with a memorial service, a viewing, or burial of the cremated remains costs more, and a full traditional funeral that happens to end in cremation can run several thousand dollars.

The wide range is why the advertised price alone doesn't tell you much. What matters is what's included.

What drives the price

Cremation cost in Utah comes down to a handful of choices:

  • Direct cremation vs. a service. Direct cremation skips embalming, a casket, and a formal service — the largest costs.
  • What's bundled. Some providers advertise a low base rate that excludes the required cremation container or other items; the real total is higher once those are added.
  • Distance and circumstances. A few providers add mileage surcharges outside a small radius, or fees for certain circumstances.
  • Memorial extras. Urns, additional certified death certificates, obituary placement, and cemetery niches are optional add-ons.

What Utah Simple Cremations charges

Our direct cremation is a transparent $995, all-inclusive. That includes 24/7 transport into our care within 50 miles of Salt Lake City, the Utah state cremation permit and death-certificate filing, the cremation at our own crematory, a basic cremation container, and the return of the cremated remains.

If you prefer to provide your own cremation container, the price is $835. Applicable Utah sales tax is added, and individuals over 200 lbs require a larger container at a higher price. That's the complete picture — nothing revealed later. See our full cost comparison and how to compare providers.

Cremation vs. a traditional funeral

A full traditional funeral with burial in Utah commonly runs $9,000–$15,000 once you add a casket, vault, cemetery plot, headstone, embalming, viewing, and funeral-director services. Direct cremation removes those costs — which is why it can be roughly 90% less. Many families still hold a meaningful memorial afterward, on their own terms.
